“Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15)

The sacrament of the anointing of the sick is not magic. There is no guarantee that the sick will be "cured" from illness. However, it is possible to recover from illness because truly, nothing is impossible with God. Nevertheless, since we are spiritual beings, having a human experience, the main purpose of anointing of the sick is first and foremost to heal our souls; the "healing" happens in the very depth of our spiritual being rather than our physical being, where we experience Peace--the classic sign of God's presence in our life. So, our feeling of peace is no longer dependent on our diagnosis or prognosis; it is in the acknowledgement that we are truly one with God.
